So, I am a bit behind on posting this, but I didn't wanna leave it unmentioned since it really was a fun occasion.

Last Thursday a not so little group of crafters and artists (that already sell or plan on selling on Etsy) met up in the uber-lovely Patisserie and Café Herr Max in Hamburg.

The event was held by two thirds of the german Etsy team in Berlin, Matt and Marie, who welcomed every new arriver warmly to the group and invited them to order whatever they wanted (how lovable is that?).

It is on events like this I realize again and again: All the great chances and connections the Internet made possible are one thing (and something I love and am grateful for) but nothing beats actually meeting cool and inspiring people in person.

That's a redundant truth, I guess, but it's good to be reminded of it once in a while:)

Matt and Marie talked about the beginnings of Etsy and the current developments regarding the international aspect, like having the possibility to have prices declared in Euros instead of US-Dollars.
For the most part we all exchanged experiences, got to know each other a bit enjoyed delicious cakes and coffee and had a lot of fun.

There really always is a special athmosphere in the air, when a lot of creative people meet up, it was lovely:)

I somehow forgot to take pictures, so I am gonna lend this one Matt made.

First Mini Guide :: How To Buy Illustrated Paper Goods Online

Heya Good Folks!

I was thinking about how this blog could give you, esteemed reader, some additional value and decided to start with this mini-guide on buying illustrated paper goods, this particular post will focus on doing that online.

It would be delightful if you could let me know in the comments whether you consider this post helpful or not.

VENUES

For the sake of keeping this guide somewhat focused I will concentrate on 3 online venues for now. All of them provide a mentionable stationery and paper goods section & vary in little details regarding their concept, all of them are definitely worth checking out.

etsy.com
Check "paper goods" and its sub category "stationery".

Etsy is probably most people's "go-to" venue online when wanting to purchase handmade wares directly from artists and designers. It's a community marketplace rooted in the concept "Buy, Sell, and Live Handmade".
Etsy has some rules for sellers regarding what can be sold.
Items must be handmade items, vintage goods or crafting supplies (designed by the seller files under "handmade" here). Resellers are not allowed.

When you not yet know the shop or artist you wanna buy from but wanna browse, for example, for stationery, Etsy provides the most diversified and detailed list of sub categories. Nevertheless you're still up for an overwhelmingly high number of offers and shops.

If you're not in the mood to go treasure hunting yourself by wading through the seas of possibilities, you could consider keeping an eye on some renowned design blogs, that will always have Etsy sellers in their features(links are posted at the end).

Some Specifics:

·You need to create an account to buy items on Etsy and for contacting sellers.
·You can leave visible feedback for your transactions (and can accordingly check the feedback for the shop you consider purchasing from).
·You can "heart" items to bookmark them.

Search for "paper goods" or "stationery".

Big Cartel isn't a community marketplace like Etsy, the creators Indie Labs rather provide small businesses with the technical possibility to set up their own & individually adjustable online store. Big Cartel is described to be made "for artists", since there are no requirements for sellers to be fulfilled as there are on Etsy, you might wanna check the specifics that might be important to you: is the product handmade, are you buying directly from the artist etc.

Some Specifics:

·Anyone can shop in an online store set up with Big Cartel: You don't need to create an account to make a purchase or contact the seller.

Check the category "paper + prints".

Supermarket offers a curated collection of design products, so you can be quite sure about a certain quality standard of the items that do get featured. And you don't have to deal with an overwhelming abundance of content. But naturally that also means someone else made a pre-selection for you.

Some Specifics:

·You need to create an account to buy items on Supermarket and for contacting sellers.
·You can comment on items.

AIMING FOR THE GOOD STUFF

Obviously the design and style of what you're looking for will be a very individual and personal choice, so I can't really give you an advice on that apart from:

Go for what takes your fancy, makes you swoon or snigger or smile happily, or for what you deem extraordinary & beautiful. You are looking for something that feels "You".

Apropos: Following current trends by the book is way overrated, not exactly creative and trends are a timed phenomena by definition.

But there are some check list points that will make it easier for you to decide on a satisfying purchase:

:Pictures:

With online shopping product pictures are key, make sure they tell you all you need or want to see. Is there a shot that focuses on details? Are you provided a glimpse on every relevant side of the product?

You should also check that there IS an actual picture of the product and not just a screenshot of a design file: A screenshot won't give you an appropriate impression of what the printed artwork or design looks like.

One thing about color: Color perception differs not only from person to person, also most computer screens work with different settings. You should be okay with slight nuance deviations of the printed product compared to what you see on your screen.

:Paper:

For a rather premium look and feel to your stationery I'd recommend going for:

> at least 90 g/m2 ( 24 lb. bond, 60 lb. text) for writing/note paper
> at least 250 g/m2 (140 lb. index) for postcards, greeting cards, business cards

Personally I'd always opt for a matte or semi-matte finish to a print or a matte texture of the paper: Details accentuated with a glossy finish can be a delicious combination but "all-over super-glossy" is NOT an upscale look.

:Seller's Savvy:

Whether the seller is considerate enough to list it all in the product description or you have to inquire him or her about it:

The seller should be willing and able to provide you with all the desired technical facts of the potentially to be purchased product in question:

The exact measurements, paper weight, paper texture, printing technique, limited edition or not, maybe shipping options etc.

UNDECIDED?

Most illustrators that sell their own wares online will offer small items like postcards in their range. Naturally these will be very affordable and shipping won't cost you much either:
Ordering one of these is the best way for you to find out whether the illustrator in question and his wares are fulfilling, or better vet, exceeding your expectations. Nothing will beat having the actual printed product in your own hands, feel the texture, eyeing the details of the illustration.

Print is a haptic medium, no online research, no matter how thoroughly executed, can replace the touch of your finger tips.

Marvellous Movies :: The Party (1968)

I am a huge Peter Sellers Fan & this movie always makes me smile, laugh till my tummy hurts and go "Awwwww" several times.

The indian film extra Hrundi V. Bakshi makes it to an exclusive Hollywood party he wasn't supposed to be attending at all. And naturally he's a bit lost there but he stands his ground. What ensues is: deconstructing dinner, diving wholeheartly in any possible embarrasing situation or encounter while being so adorably awkward & glancing with big, wet puppy eyes at charmingly chanting french actresses. Not to mention the possibly first foam party and paited elephants.

After starting out at a ponderous pace this movie is outdoing itself in hilariousness till the end, or well, near the end, then it fades out in a post-Party-new-day happy haze. This movie clearly celebrates the comical genius Mr Sellers is, some scenes have a very detailed & delicious buildup, I understand that is what some might consider making the movie "slow" in parts. To me it is unadulterated fun & airs the virtues of another era of filmmaking.

I highly recommend you find out for yourself where you stand if you don't know this gem already.

The following clip is taken from the beginning of the movie, when desperate cleaning attempts result in shoe-loss, but it alraedy gives you a good impression of the style and humour of the movie:)

Oh So Lovely:: Dixie's Soy Candles In Vintage Glassware

I discovered Dixie's Soy Candles in her Etsy Shop "Dixie DIY" a while ago and have had a favorite eversince (Cucumber Melone in Vintage Pitcher).

Ooooh, lookie:

Unfortunately I can't order any deliciously scented soy awesomeness cause these fragile gems are only shipped domestically.

The glassware varies in grades of whimsyness, my favorites are the translucent ones:
The combination of the glass and the solid, clean, white wax shining through, has a sophisticated but warm look. I also love how Dixie styles her pictures: The photographs enhance the vintage element and keep the picture range coherent.

While I wallow in self-pity I suggest all you lucky americans check out Dixie's luscious scent creations like Banana Nut Bread, Basil Sage Mint or Rose Jasmine.

I love to cook & I usually do it every day.

But throughout the week I don't always have the time or nerve to really indulge in the cooking itself (I am one of those people that would describe cooking as meditative).

Then I want something quick, tasty, preferably healthy and happy-making.
Most people interested in cooking and active in the net probably know smitten kitchen by now, I have been browsing around the site lately, love the look, love the food, love the photos.

When I browse recipes I usually alter them, because I don't have all the ingredients, or I can think of something better, or because I have some food at home that needs to be used, or just because I can:)

In the following RECIPE I substituted Sweet Potatoes with Hokkaido and cilantro with Italian Parsley, both were left, cause I didn't need all of it for another meal the day before (gotta be imaginative as a single cook;)).

It was super-quick (depends also a bit on what kind of lentils you use, I used red lentils, which are done in a blink of an eye), very yummy, warming and made me feel goooood.

Entry for the illustrator contest "Creatures in film"

So here's what this contest is about according to its initiators jitter magazine:

Beasts! What would man be without the creature? Whether admiration or contempt, emotion or horror, the ambivalent relationship between man and creature has been the source of countless stories of all cultures. Seeing himself as creation's crowning glory, man keeps his distance to nature only to use it as screen for all kinds of desires and fears. Over and over again this has been the reason for movies; whether they aim for a romantic view of a primordial lost world, used at the same time as a metaphor for the innocent of childhood or they aim for the darkest nightmares of an unnameable evil hidden in any unknown terrain -- even in our own basement. The fascination of the creature is a never ending source.

Now let me try to put in words what I had in mind when creating this illustration.

Clearly the beast in this picture is Godzilla. Godzilla is a creature whose size and powers are explained to be connected to atomic radiation. At least in the beginning of the Godzilla series the creature is described as "hating mankind".

One could interprete these elements as an attempt to deal with the terrors and fears the atomic age confronted humans with. By transforming it into something less scary since obviously fictional and more story-like, something you could turn off on TV or walk out of in a theatre, when the story is over. The threat turns into something else, something that allows the viewer to deal with it without dealing with it, if that makes any sense at all.

Guess thats what I tried to convey with the 3D-glasses:
There's the real terror going on (people ARE scared and terrified and overwhelmed with coping with reality), yet they willingly pay very close attention to a fictional story based on what's terrifying them. This is indeed a very fascinating phenomena.

There's obviously a reference to Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the picture
(The Enola Gray throwing "Little Boy" bombs, "Fat man" bombs at the left) and thereby a reference to the very real horror and desperation Japan had to deal with.

Hope I described my thoughts and intentions in a rather understandable way. Thanks for paying attention.

This is my first acrylic painting, it's very obvious I lack technique and routine.
It doesn't feel finished at all, but I just needed to let go. Kinda curious and anxious what the next one will turn out like.

I made this "alternate" version of the illustration of the BRMC singer/guitar player. Whereas the other one is more a character study and very focused on the vector graphic,
I wanted this one to have more "illustrational character", more compositional elements, more imagery.

Both versions are meant to convey the charisma of the imaged person.
My interpretation of it after all.

Dies ist eine alternative Version der Illustration des BRMC Sängers/Gitarristen.
Während die andere mehr eine Charakterstudie und sehr auf die eigentliche Vektorgrafik konzentriert ist, sollte diese etwas mehr "illustrativen Character" haben, mehr komponierte Elemente, mehr Bildhaftigkeit.

Beide Versionen sollen das Charisma der abgebildeten Person vermitteln.
Zumindest meine Interpretation davon.

Well...having a try on explaining where this came from:
I guess there was just one female face "retouched into arbitrariness" too much looking at me from some glossy brochure title.
And it's annoying me. And I think it's influencing us all far more than we like to admit: All these women, appearing to be satisfied with pleasing and being desired.
Not saying that's actually how they feel, but everything "media" sure as hell is designed to convey that impression. Pretty faces. They all look the same.

I miss originality, character and life in those faces. I miss characteristics that disturb my eye, irritate my manipulated thoughts about female beauty.

Maybe I even miss female paragons? I don't know.
All I know is, thinking about this issue for a longer time, creeps me out a tad. Cause I wonder where it will end, is it getting worse, can it get worse, how many gorgeous girls/women are out there deeply insecure about themselves/their bodies/looks.
And not just in their teens.

Sure you can tell them, that's not what it's all about, still they're surrounded by pictures that scream the opposite into their faces, everyday.

I don't feel hysteric about this, but it's something that's keeping my head busy every now and then.

Also...ein Versuch zu erklären, wo dies herkam:
Ich denke, es war einfach ein weibliches "in die Beliebigkeit retuschiertes" Gesicht zuviel, das mir von irgendeiner Hochglanzbroschüre entgegenblickte.
Und es nervt mich. Und ich glaube, es beeinflusst uns alle weitaus mehr, asl wir zugeben: Alle diese Frauen, die sich scheinbar damit zufrieden geben, lediglich zu gefallen und begehrt zu werden. Ich will nicht sagen, dass das tatsächlich dem entspricht, was sie fühlen, aber mannigfaltige Medien sind verdammt bestrebt, genau diesen Eindruck zu vermitteln. Hübsche Gesichter. Sie sehen alle gleich aus.

Ich vermisse Originalität, Charakter und Leben in diesen Gesichtern. Ich vermisse Merkmale, die mein Auge stören, meine manipulierten Ansichten über weibliche Schönheit irritieren.

Vielleicht fehlen mir ja sogar weibliche Vorbilder? Ich weiss es nicht.
Ich weiss nur, das es mich ein wenig gruselt, wenn ich länger über diese Thematik nachdenke. Denn ich frage mich, wo das endet, wird es schlimmer, kann es schlimmer werden, wie viele großartige Mädchen/Frauen gibt es da draussen, die zutiefst verunsichert sind, wegen ihres Aussehen, ihres Körpers.
Und das nicht nur in der Teenager-Phase ihres Lebens.

Natürlich kann man ihnen sagen, darauf kommt es nicht an, dennoch sind sie von Bildern umgeben, die das Gegenteil in ihre Gesichter schreien, und das jeden Tag.

Dieses Thema macht mich nicht hysterisch, aber es beschäftigt mich definitiv immer wieder.

The lines are from their song "The warmth", I think they describe him

I made this for a design contest (the very first "pitsch" contest), theme being "The early bird catches the worm", no furhter briefing, no restrictions. My idea behind it was to kind of transfer this "old" saying in nowadays times, doing so by "remixing" the stiff, old-fashioned stitched pictures (think of "Home sweet home" for example) into a loose ends, vibrant colors, modern times artwork.

Oh yeah, it ended up third place.
